Is Aikido a martial art?

17 January 2009 2,680 views 4 Comments

bild-11O-Sensei says clearly that Aikido is not for the purpose of developing individual strength or technique so as to be able to pin, throw; or defeat an attacker, but rather to unify our own center with the center of the universe, to find our true task on the earth, to bring all mankind into one family, and to love and protect all things.

O-Sensei says also that Aikido is fundamentally different from all other martial arts or martial ways, that it is true budo which means the working of love, – that the techniques of Aikido whether sword, spear or throwing/pinning, are to understand and unify with the universe and its movement, to heal, purify, and open the heart and spirit of those who practice, so that humankind itself can be led out of materialism and power competition into the world of spirit, to sweep away its illness, darkness, and evil, to be able to resonate with the divine.

    Hola,

    Mr Peter Shapiro,

    Saludos
    Enrique

    Enrique,
    1. Can aikido be practiced as self-defense? No.
    2. Can it serve as self-defense in case of a real attack? Yes.

In terms of practice, O-Sensei spoke of “loving attack and peaceful reconciliation” and also of absolute non-resistance…
At another level, as Aikido is an expression of connection, love, and oneness, practiced as purification-misogi, and to connect our hearts to the divine, to connect our center to the center of the divine, self-defense as a defining concept is meaningless, since self-defense implies self and other. Practicing thinking in terms of self-defense is dualistic, it creates consciousness of the other, of danger, thus increasing the illusion of separation; it moves our nen into darkness and creates jaki, the ki of winning/losing, competition, success/failure, fear etc., what I have just written is a partial explanation of the key aikido principle “Masa-katsu–Agatsu–Katsu-Hayaibi. Hayaibi means no time or space,… an other must imply time and space…

How is this expressed in practice? By understanding irimi-tenkan. Irimi means to enter spiritually as well as physically, to the point or dimension before the idea to attack takes form (saki-no-saki-no-saki). The tori’s irimi calls forth the attacking/defending movement of the uke, which becomes, is guided into an aikido move. The. Aikido techniques are never done in response to an attacking movement… This may be difficult at first, but it should define the direction of our practice…

Of course there will always be an element of self and other in our practice, the question is , and i repeat, what is the direction of our practice?

In regard to real attacks on the street etc.,.. I know many stories where an aikido practitioner successfully used a technique. The interesting thing is that in each case, the attacker relaxed and often apologized afterwards. In one case in France, a woman Aikido teacher who used nikyo ended up teaching the whole gang that had attacked her…

    …………………………………………………………………………….

    1. ¿puede Aikido ser practicado como defensa personal? No.

    Saludos

hello Enrique, here are some translations of O-Sensei’s words, I hope they will make things clearer. They are my translation into english; It will take a while to do the spanish translation.

    (2) In Aikido we come to a profound enlightened understanding of the principles of the relationship between Heaven, Earth, and Man,– the Great Way of the Universe itself,– and the profound and mysterious working of Kototama….., Aiki is a Way in which we practice to bring about peace and happiness on the earth,— to manifest the Love which is the Great Heart of the Universe expressed through purity, beauty, truth and joy.. ..
Investing all the power of our living being, we practice this marvelous Way of Bu…

    (3) The practice of Aiki moves from enlightenment to enlightenment (satori to satori)..

    Peter

    —————————————————————
