Dear Mr Shapiro,
Is the concept of Bun / Bu linked to the bunbu-ryôdô, the philosophical thinking during the Tokugawa-time that shows itself in ,the way of the sword and the brush’? And what would imply such and link for the practice of Aikido?
Thanks a lot for an answer, best wishes, Fafnir

Hello Fafnir,
no, the relationship is parallel rather than direct. bun has to do with the ongoing formless constantly creative aspect of aikido, and also its aspect as a mirror of the conscious and sub/un conscious parts of the practitioner. bun; art, science, philosophy, religious experience and thought mathematics energetic geometry, psychology, eastern thought and culture, out of the box thinking generally,.. will all show themselves in someone’s bu specifically in their aikido movements and practice. another more modern way to say the above is that aikido is comprehensive, as is the human spirit, not specialized. ..it also has to do with aikido modeling the answer for the specific crisises of this time. remember aikido has as its purpose the renewal of all human life and culture, humankind as one family., the expression of love’s universal activity, purification, the supremacy of the meta-physical and the loving protection of all ….it is not a training for an elite samurai class, but it is absolutely training in leadership…
i suggest to begin to understand what o-sensei meant by bun and bu, to explore the work of r. buckminster fuller…
