The Wave in Aikido
Question: What is the wave?
Peter: To quote O-Sensei,” the move expresses and completes itself as a great wave of the sea.” For instance; the beginning of ikkyo is the wave rising to its peak, which occurs when the side of the uke is opened, then the wave falls as the uke is brought to the mat.–The wave completes its motion to its end moving out through the uke’s arm as he is pinned…It is something very concrete. However, when the wave happens, other spiritual dimensions are opened, as well as the move becoming an expression of love…
It is also important to see that the wave rises out of nothingness and returns to nothingness….and that that nothingness can be seen as the spiritual matrix out of which everything arises, the samuhara;… thus: samuhara no-o-unabara.
Remember that in aikido you are moving in more than one dimension; you are “activating, harmonizing, and integrating the genkai and the yukai’”.. (O-Sensei)…..
